Career Center

Position description (i.e. general duties):

  • The GA for the Career Center will support all function areas of career development for Mansfield University students and alumni. This person will gain hands-on experience in student advising and programming in the following areas: student career development, self-assessment, career fair planning and implementation, varied internal projects and assignments (e.g. marketing and promotions, web-site development, program assessment), student outreach to include presentations and representation of the Career Center at campus events.
  • Key responsibilities and activities include: advising, workshops, teaching, team membership, and use of technology.
Basic requirements (i.e. typing, filing, lifting, driving, teaching, speaking, computer, etc):
  • The graduate assistant position for the Career Center is created to identify a graduate student with the following skills/attributes:
  • In good academic standing;
  • Self-starter with strong initiative to begin and complete projects;
  • Experience providing peer leadership and organizing, developing and/or presenting programs or workshops;
  • Ability to manage and plan multiple events and tasks simultaneously;
  • Flexible approach to problem solving; result-oriented;
  • Committed to the overall development of undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Highly values the merits of a liberal arts education;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, such that little editing or proofing is needed;
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Moderate level of creativity in the use of creating promotional materials suitable to topic and audience;
  • Good attention to detail and comfortable with multiple on-going projects;
  • Proven demonstrated activity with campus life as an undergraduate;
  • Highly responsible and trustworthy; will honor confidentiality;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, career planning or student development theory would be a benefit.
Preferred graduate programs:
  • Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership
  • Master of Science in Education.
Specific assignments/responsibilities:
  • (To be discussed throughout the year and at the evaluation meetings)
  • Career Advising:
  • Develop career advising skills by providing one-on-one and group career awareness, career planning, and job search counseling.
  • Assist clients in locating career and educational planning information.
  • Interpret print and computer career assessment tools.
  • Develop strong interviewing skills by assisting with the Mock Interview Program
Career Peer Program:
Responsible for the training and leadership of Career Peers
Conduct meetings and plan training for Career Peers (student workers) providing drop-in resume and cover letter critiques.
 
Marketing & Outreach:
Develop skills in planning and conducting outreach presentations on career development topics.
Create materials and resources related to career planning and job search topics.
Plan and deliver outreach presentations to first-year students.
Support the use and application of various technologies to provide career-related services and programs to students.
Represent Career Center at Orientation and Visitation Days.
 
Events Management:
Assist in the planning and coordination of the Healthcare Career Fair (fall) and Job & Internship Fair (spring). Recruit and supervise student volunteers for events.
Collaboratively develop, organize, and present career-related workshops and events specifically targeted to undergraduate students.
 
Assessment:
Identify benchmark information, theoretical foundations and learning outcomes models useful to Career Center evaluation and assessment efforts.
Develop evaluations on the effectiveness of presentations and programming.
Collect and summarize student data, program evaluations and recommend modifications
 
Employer Relations:
Assist with the organization and implementation of programs and technology associated with the delivery of the Center’s on-campus interviewing, job/internship posting.
Assist employer representatives with recruitment needs to ensure their satisfaction.
Solicit employer feedback on services and students preparation to identify areas of improvement.
