Art Education

Job Description/Responsibilities:  The assistantship experience will provide both professional and practical components for the graduate student in art education by being involved in the following areas:

A) Saturday Morning Art Program Implementation (Fall semester)
  • Inventory of supplies, listing deficiencies, researching suppliers
  • Write and publish newsletter for parents and students
  • Document by photographing artworks and classes
  • Assist in lesson plan evaluation and observation
  • Planning and execution of community art show of student work from program 
The Saturday Morning Art Program services the community with two hours of art classes for children 4-13 years of age for a very modest fee. Pre-service art education majors gain valuable experience in formulating and implementing lesson plans involving the production of art, art history, art criticism and aesthetics appropriate for different age groups in their elementary methods course. A graduate assistant would gain exceptional experience in both community outreach as well as the art educational aspects of this program.
 
B) Secondary Methods High School Observation & Participation Experience (Spring semester)

  • Compile updated list of middle and high school teachers
  • Assist in observing & assessing individual undergraduate students teaching in O & P lab
  • Coordinate video taping of lessons for evaluation by instructor
  • Document artworks by photography
As a precursor to actual student teaching, short mini-lessons are taught in area middle and high schools by undergraduate and graduate certification candidates in art education. The labs are run simultaneously out of necessity in scheduling, creating a need to have an “extra pair of eyes” observe and document assessments of their teaching.
  
C) Classroom Experiences

  • Prepare video documentation of classes for evaluation purposes
  • Assist in safety implementation and prevention
  • Video recording classroom activities for student and instructor assessment
  • Equipment repair and upkeep evaluation
  • Supply monitoring and coordination with lesson plans 
D) Research Experience
  • Research current issues in art education
  • Research curriculum resources for elementary, middle school, and high school
  • Development and implementation of individual and joint research projects
  • Research cross-curricular applications of art education
  • Research effective qualitative techniques appropriate to art education
 Research projects are gleaned from active participation in field experiences inherent in the proposed assistantship. All education graduates research and write papers in their field as part of their program. Joint faculty and student research and individual student research is encouraged and mentored.
 
E) Art Education Related Activities

  • NAEA (National Art Education Association) advisor’s assistant
  • Coordinating workshops hosted by NAEA
  • Planning trips to the NAEA/PAEA conventions with advisor
Active participation in the national and state organizations in art education (NAEA/PAEA) is essential to developing professional teaching practices before, during, and after graduation. The art education graduate assistant would serve as a liaison between Mansfield University art education students and NAEA/PAEA.
 
F) Administrative Tasks
  • Executing and consolidating statistics of a post graduation and alumni questionnaire for department self-evaluation purposes
  • Update equipment and studio needs
  • Check all Act 151, Act 34, FBI Clearance requirements
  • Classroom supply inventory and vendor assessment
  • Maintain resource bookcase of lesson planning materials

    In becoming an effective educator, administration of necessary tasks both on a daily basis and in long term planning are an important part of the teaching/learning process. Developing appropriate assessments for the process of education, the environment in which it takes place, and the tools for planning and learning.  

The elementary and secondary methods instructors will work closely in mentoring the graduate assistant in all of the duties listed above.
